Why Gutters Matter

The Cheapest Part of the House to Get Wrong

Gutters are the least glamorous part of a building and one of the most consequential. Their job is to take every gallon that lands on the roof and put it somewhere harmless. When they fail, that water goes straight down the wall and into the ground beside the foundation instead.

The damage shows up in expensive places. Water overflowing at the eaves works back under the roof edge and rots the fascia and decking. Water running down the wall gets behind siding. Water pooling at the foundation causes settlement and basement moisture. None of those are gutter repairs by the time they are noticed.

The common failures are straightforward: gutters clogged with debris, sections pulling away from the fascia, joints that have opened and leak, downspouts discharging too close to the foundation, and gutters that were never sized properly for the roof area feeding them.

We install, repair and replace gutters and fit gutter guards, and we assess them as part of every roof inspection.

Gutter Guards

Worth It or Not, Honestly

Gutter guards are genuinely useful in the right situation and oversold in the wrong one. If your property has significant tree cover, particularly mature trees overhanging the roof, guards will save you clearing gutters several times a year and will prevent the overflow damage that comes from missing one.

On a property with little tree cover the case is weaker, and we will say so rather than sell you a product you do not need. No guard eliminates maintenance entirely, and anyone telling you otherwise is overselling.

What matters more than the guard is that the gutters themselves are correctly sized, properly pitched to the downspouts, securely fixed to sound fascia, and discharging far enough from the foundation to actually help. A guard on a badly installed gutter system solves nothing.

Book a free inspection and we will tell you what your gutters actually need.

Common Questions About Gutters

How do I know if my gutters need replacing?
Sections pulling away from the fascia, joints leaking, visible sagging, water overflowing during rain, or rust and splitting. Isolated problems can be repaired. Widespread failure usually means replacement.
On a property with significant tree cover, usually yes. With little tree cover the case is weaker and we will tell you so. No guard removes maintenance entirely.
Twice a year is the general guide, more often with heavy tree cover. If you are clearing them more than that, guards are probably worth considering.
Yes, where the damage came from a covered event. Hail dents gutter faces and high wind pulls sections loose, and both are commonly missed in a storm claim. We document gutters as part of the roof inspection.
Yes, and it is usually the sensible time to do it. The fascia is accessible, the crew is already there, and the gutters can be set correctly against the new roof edge.
Usually the gutters are undersized for the roof area feeding them, or the pitch to the downspouts is wrong, or there are too few downspouts. Clearing them will not fix any of those.
Far enough from the building that the water is not soaking the ground beside the foundation. Extensions or underground drainage are often the simplest fix for a persistent damp basement.
Yes, and we assess gutters as part of every roof inspection at no extra cost.
